Of course I said yes, but asked the group to sing the alphabet song, but holding at “eeee”. Thats when I snapped the photo. Singing the alphabet song, brought out their child like ease, and they all laughed! resulting in a fantastic natural laugh for everyone.

After reading it I asked for a pre-session consultation with my headshot photographer, it was such a good idea, I felt more confident at the photo shoot.

Sitting is dubious for headshots, since while it is more agreeable, the stance may not be as complimenting. Creating a characteristic articulation is a fundamental piece of the cycle too. But there’s one thing missing. Once you’ve got the technical side down, the only way to get a great headshot is by capturing an expression. Without it, it’s essentially a snapshot.

Something I often talk to my clients about, is their branding. Headshots can often be a design element on their website, or match their personal brand. Background also plays an important role for taking headshots. I like using photography backdrops for headshots. Solid color backdrop is a great choice, such as black, white, grey as well as dark blue, such as these: https://bit.ly/3tab02S
With backdrops, you can create the perfect and different backgrounds for headshots.

One remembers from art class about the importance of North light in the artists studio? There is a reason.

To excel in the craft, it’s critical to understand lighting ratios & light direction to actually create mood, depth and personality.

Look at the great photographers, Karsh, Gittings, Steichen, Moore, etc. Look at the catchlights in their patrons’ eyes, and the shadow under the nose (butterfly for glamor in women, camp for tension). Look at the great Imagon lenses of classical Hollywood starlets. Depth and character, yet believable.

The flat lighting fad of today is much easier, but lacks dimension. Much like music designed around the click. Shallow, yet popular.

Rijn, Da Venci, Raphael, never used flat lighting in the classics. For reason.

We were taught in the PPofA advanced portraiture classes to study the classic artists. Learn how to recreate their lighting and more important… the SHADOWS… Understand light directions, ratios 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, etc.

Like great musicians, some will learn and understand light.
