It is amazing how people will open up to you if you treat them with respect. Be prepared, if a subject is dressed in historical or native garb at a popular tourist site, they most likely will expect a tip.

Also, I use a digital voice recorder to keep notes as I go. Most are relatively cheap and you can pick one up for around $35 to $40. As a bird watcher and ecotourist, there is a lot of information to keep up with and after a few days it is very hard to remember the name of every bird, location, trail, etc. at the end of the day. Also the recorder will time stamp your entry and you can easily refer to your notes on any particular shot.

two weeks ago I went to Lapland that made you open your eyes to different stuff and would like to share the travel album, as well as my 365 project (link is in my name)
