Meter on the sky, then note the setting. Then meter on the ground and note the setting. Example: The sky is 125 @ f/22. The ground is 125 @ f/16 So the difference is one f/stop or 2x the difference. That is the sky is 2x brighter then the ground. So you’ll need a 2x nutrial density filter. Set the camera for the ground which is 125 @ f/16. But the sky will be 2x overexposed. The 2x graduated filter will hold back 2x the light from the sky. You must adjust the filter so the dark part is covering the sky. This can be tricky when the camera is on the ground.
