In general, I have to add 30-35 units of fill light (I have Lightroom 3, so I don’t have “darks”) to every photo, unless it’s a high key, low range image — in which case I can’t add much fill light at all. If my scene has too much dynamic range for my camera and conditions allow, I’ll bracket for HDR. My HDR images use exposure fusion to retain a realistic look.

I also like to adjust the tone curve’s contrast to high contrast or medium contrast.

One of the things I’m trying to master is backlit landscapes with the sun out of the frame. (I’ll use a tree — or maybe my hat, my hand, or my body — to shade the lens from the sun.) I struggle with ETTR without getting clipping in the highlights and still have really deep shadows. Highlight recovery of overexposed areas is unsatisfactory. I think I did fair work with this image. (It’s not HDR.)
